Bootstraps
This ongoing series of altered and cast found objects directly addresses the trite solution of "pulling oneself up by the bootstraps." The objects themselves function as metaphors for social systems, as they appear to function until participated in. By interacting with the artwork, viewers experience a sense of futility that calls for reflection upon larger social systems and how they are stacked against certain people. The world is not made for these people in the same way that these objects are not made for my audiences. By navigating the space around the objects or directly participating in the artwork by interacting with the sculptures, they can experience the objects from new perspectives, thus, challenging their concept of systems and their functionality outside of the gallery.
